Pick an important and possibly stressful situation in your life (e.g., starting or leaving a relationship; deciding whether to have a child; deciding whether to leave your job or change jobs, etc.).
Briefly describe the situaton:
Describe the various ways you might feel like responding to that situation in terms of how much it motivates you to want security and/or reward.
One very important thing to keep in mind
is that the amounts of security and reward in a given situation are independent of one another. The scores do not have to add up to 10. In fact, it is possible that a situation might pull for a response that reflects very high security AND very high reward. Also, some situations do not have much of a reward pull (e.g., studying for an exam, waiting for health test results). In this case, think of the reward you would be following if you did not feel pulled by security.
In any given moment, we may feel different motivational pulls from security, reward, both, or sometime neither; in the moment, it may even feel like a tug-of-war. In some instances, reward motivations may provide beneficial opportunities (e.g., getting ahead, joy, broadening of possibilities) but may also come with costs (e.g., risk, possible failure or rejection, physical harm). Other times, following the pull of security may provide some benefits (e.g., being careful can provide time to reflect, protection from actual harm) but also result in a number of costs (e.g., missed opportunities, worry, diminished life enjoyment).
